Thom Yorke spoke against the war in Iraq today at a rally outside RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, where 14 US Air Force B-52 bombers are based. Three were seen leaving yesterday, and eight came back early this morning from the assault on Baghdad.
Between 2,000 and 3,000 people marched to the base this afternoon, watched by police in riot gear, in what Gloucestershire police call the largest operation the force has ever mounted. The other speakers, by the local paper's account, were the writers Will Self and George Monbiot, the comedian Mark Thomas and the veteran peace campaigner Pat Arrowsmith.
Yorke told the crowd that the American government had stolen its election and needed the war to win the next one, and that America is being run by religious maniacs and bigots.
