Band Aid 20's “Do They Know It's Christmas?” is the new UK number one, straight in at the top of the chart announced on Sunday 5 December. Thom Yorke plays piano on it and Jonny Greenwood guitar. Radiohead have never been higher than number three on their own, with “Paranoid Android” in 1997.
Nigel Godrich produced the record, and the players Thom and Jonny joined are Paul McCartney on bass, Danny Goffey of Supergrass on drums and Fran Healy of Travis on acoustic guitar, with Chris Martin and Bono among the singers. The money goes to famine relief in Africa, Sudan's Darfur region first.
The CD came out on Monday 29 November, and the single sold 297,210 copies in its first week. NME tips it to stay at number one until Christmas, and says even the prime minister, Tony Blair, has bought a copy.
