Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway join Jarvis Cocker's Weird Sisters

written up for the archive

Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway play in the Weird Sisters, the wizard rock band from the books, in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, with Jarvis Cocker singing. One of the band's three songs on the soundtrack, “This Is the Night”, went up online this week.

In February the film's producer, David Heyman, told a Melbourne paper that the Weird Sisters would play regular instruments that are a little bit strange, like bagpipes with really long pipes and guitars with three necks3. On screen Greenwood plays guitar and Selway drums, with Steve Claydon and Jason Buckle beside them.

Cocker wrote the songs at the invitation of the film's composer, Patrick Doyle, and the players on the recordings include Pulp's bassist, Steve Mackey. According to Virgin.net, the parts were first offered to Franz Ferdinand, who turned them down because they were on tour. The soundtrack album is due on 15 November, three days before the film opens in Britain and America.

The Weird Sisters play the Yule Ball in the Great Hall at Hogwarts, done up as a silver wonderland with a stage of ice. Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley, said on set at Leavesden Studios that the band looked really cool and that it was great to have real rock and roll people.
