Radiohead.com says it uses what it learns about visitors to make graphs

first posted on Treefingers by Miro · rewritten for the archive

Radiohead.com has put a new page behind the “leave” link at the bottom right of the scrapbook, the part of the site Thom Yorke said in February is not meant to be coherent. It explains what all the buttons around the site have been for. Until this month the leave page said only Goodbye. We know where you live.3

Now it says the site has followed each visitor through its pages with the cookie they accepted on the way in, and traced their IP addresses to a country. Most websites set cookies that people accept without noticing, it goes on, and what those gather (the pages visited, the choices made, where people come from, how often they return) keeps hundreds of companies in business. We don't sell the information that we get from you - instead, stupidly, we use it to make graphs.2 The page offers no reason for it, except perhaps to alert careful visitors to what happens to what they give away whenever they go online.

So far the site has made a graph of the clicks on each button of the page full of buttons, from “avoid” to “witch”, and a map of the button clicked most often in each country. The site says it will reset the map now and then, because “avoid” keeps winning worryingly often.
