Shynola on making Radiohead's “Pyramid Song” video

first posted on Treefingers by Miro · rewritten for the archive

Shynola, the animation collective who made the 2001 video for “Pyramid Song”, talk about their work in an interview with The Australian. In the six years since their first professional job they have made videos for acts from Blur to Beck. They have also been making animated sequences for the film of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, due out this year.

When we met Thom Yorke he said we were more like a rock group than Radiohead were.

Jason Groves says they might have preferred a band of their own, had they been able to play as well as they could draw.

The paper rates their videos strong on ideas and free of clutter, and picks “Pyramid Song” as the clearest case. The song is about a man who jumps into a river and meets his past and his future. Yorke told the group it grew out of an apocalyptic dream about the end of the world. Shynola's Baws says they did not want simply to animate the dream; they set out to distil it into a story of their own, and the film they made is an eerie one, set under water. For Chris Harding the aim is to marry picture and music, never to advertise a band's faces or sound.
