Radiohead's catalogue goes on sale as whole-album MP3s at 7digital
Britain's biggest download store, 7digital, is selling every Radiohead album as an MP3 without copy protection, under a deal with EMI, and to buyers in the US and the rest of the world as well as Britain. It is the first time the band have let their whole catalogue onto a major download site.
Nothing is sold track by track. The six studio albums and the live I Might Be Wrong cost £7 each, about $14, and some 22 official singles come bundled with their B-sides at £1.79. NME says the band want the albums heard and sold as complete works.
That rule is what keeps Radiohead off iTunes, the world's largest download store, which requires most artists to sell single tracks as well. OK Computer and The Bends were briefly on iTunes a few years ago, and full albums have been sold before through warchildmusic.com, a charity site that 7digital runs. Thom Yorke's solo album, The Eraser, is on iTunes, Glide Magazine notes, and can be bought there a song at a time.
