Thom and Andy Yorke's “All for the Best” gets a video

written up for the archive

Rolling Stone premiered the video for Thom Yorke's cover of Miracle Legion's “All for the Best” on its website on Friday 18 September. His brother Andy, singer of the Unbelievable Truth, sings the backing vocals, and Rolling Stone says it is the first time the two have appeared on a song together. Thom is credited with vocals and every instrument, and Nigel Godrich produced and engineered it. Melinda Tupling directed the film.

The song is from Miracle Legion's 1987 debut, Surprise Surprise Surprise. Mark Mulcahy sang in that band and later in Polaris. Thom's version opens the benefit album of his songs, Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy, due in the US from Shout! Factory on 29 September. The album was made after Mulcahy's wife, Melissa, died suddenly in September 2008, leaving him with their three-year-old twin daughters.

Michael Stipe, Dinosaur Jr, The National and Frank Black are on it too, and the Unbelievable Truth cover the title song. Thom's track is already out on a seven-inch limited to 2,000 copies, on The Mezzotint Label, with Mulcahy's own “Ciao My Shining Star” on the other side.

The video gets its first big-screen showing on Sunday at a benefit concert for Mulcahy at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, where Frank Black, David Berkeley, the Butterflies of Love and the Autumn Defense play his songs.
