Three more songs from On a Friday's 1986 tape turn up on YouTube
“Fat Girl”, “Fragile Friend” and “Lemming Trail”, three more songs from the tape the band recorded in 1986, reportedly at Abingdon School, as On a Friday and before Jonny Greenwood joined, have gone up on YouTube.
Forrest Wickman, writing for Slate, likens “Fat Girl”, posted on 8 January, to the work of a Smiths tribute band, with a teenage Thom Yorke doing a convincing Morrissey over a guitar that could have come off “This Charming Man”. “Lemming Trail”, posted today, is led by a saxophone and sits closer to the Peter Gunn theme than to the Smiths. Spin calls “Fragile Friend” less like the band to come, with a yelping vocal, horns, a little twang and a falsetto that may or may not be Yorke's.
Like the two posted in November, they come from the YouTube user klootme, who says the tape came from her husband, a schoolmate of the band's. That is a better pedigree than the “lost” Radiohead song that went round before Christmas, which turned out to be the work of Christopher Stopa, a Toronto singer-songwriter and baker.
