Steve Reich writes a new piece from two Radiohead songs

written up for the archive

Steve Reich is writing Radio Rewrite, a new piece built on two Radiohead songs, “Everything In Its Right Place” from Kid A and “Jigsaw Falling Into Place” from In Rainbows. It began in Kraków last September, at the Sacrum Profanum festival, where Jonny Greenwood played Reich's guitar piece “Electric Counterpoint” and Reich talked with the band at length afterwards.

Steve saw this guy was seriously interested in his music and Steve became seriously interested in theirs.

Andrew Burke2

That was Andrew Burke, chief executive of the London Sinfonietta, quoted in The Guardian. Thirteen of the ensemble's players will give the premiere at the Southbank Centre on 5 March 2013. The Fader reports that Reich has written no new work since WTC 9/11 in 2010.

Burke says what excites him most is simply having a new piece by Reich, and he expects the songs to be a starting point. I don't think Steve will be quoting these songs directly. I don't think that's his style.2
