Nigel Godrich unveils his band Ultraísta

written up for the archive

Ultraísta, the band Radiohead's producer Nigel Godrich has formed with the drummer Joey Waronker and the singer Laura Bettinson, have put out a second song with a video, “Static Light”. The first, “Smalltalk”, arrived with a video of its own on 9 May.

Godrich and Waronker both play in Atoms for Peace, Thom Yorke's band with Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Waronker, once of Walt Mink and Ima Robot, has drummed for Beck among many others, and lives in Los Angeles. Bettinson writes and produces as well as sings, and is based in London.

The name comes from ultraísmo, an early 20th-century literary movement in the Spanish-speaking world whose members included the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges.

The video for “Smalltalk” barely leaves Bettinson's face, lit in the dark by coloured lights that slide across it, while her voice floats over a tight rhythm and airy synthesisers.
