On a Friday's 1986 demo tape sells for £2,000

written up for the archive

A demo cassette made in 1986 by On a Friday, the band Radiohead were before they took that name, sold for £2,000 at Omega Auctions in Stockport on Saturday 14 September. A collector in the United States bought it, against the auction house's estimate of £1,000 to £1,500.

Six of its songs have never been on an official Radiohead release. In January 2012 “Fragile Friend” and “Lemming Trail” turned up on YouTube. The reports of the sale said a few had done the rounds online for years, “Girl (In The Purple Dress)” one of them, but that “Mountains (On The Move)” was one fans had never heard.

Paul Fairweather of the auction house announced the sale in July. It has come directly from an old friend of the band who was at school with them at Abingdon School.5 The house held that friend's 1985-86 yearbook too, with the band in its pictures. Omega called the tape the only copy known to exist.
