Jonny Greenwood picks Sun Ra, Clive James and Richard Herring
Podcasts kept Jonny Greenwood company on the drive to the studio, he tells Kathryn Bromwich in the Observer's On My Radar, where he names six things he is enjoying. I was never happier than when driving to the Radiohead studio with half a good idea, and an Adam and Joe podcast to listen to.
1 His podcast pick is Richard Herring's series from the Leicester Square Theatre; podcasts, he says, saved him from taping BBC7 off the radio and wearing out old Chris Morris cassettes.
The piece runs three days before he plays his There Will Be Blood score with the London Contemporary Orchestra at the Southbank Centre, as part of David Byrne's Meltdown, on 19 August.
The album he chooses is In the Orbit of Ra, a Sun Ra and His Arkestra compilation put together by the Arkestra's long-time saxophonist Marshall Allen. The game is The Talos Principle, and the app is Mubi, which offers 30 films at a time; Netflix, he says, drives him crazy.
He owes a lot to Clive James, whose Poetry Notebook 2006-2014 is his book. James led him to most of the writers and poets he loves, he says, and gave him the further education he missed when he dropped out of university at 19. James also sent him to Evelyn Waugh, and Greenwood's audiobook is the Sword of Honour trilogy, read by Robert Powell, which he secretly rates above Brideshead.
