Thom Yorke's solo records and In Rainbows stream on Apple Music

written up for the archive

Apple Music opened on Tuesday 30 June with four records Spotify does not have: Thom Yorke's The Eraser and Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, Atoms for Peace's Amok and Radiohead's In Rainbows, the one Radiohead album Spotify has never carried. Tomorrow's Modern Boxes came out last September as a BitTorrent bundle.

In July 2013 Nigel Godrich took Amok and The Eraser off Spotify, saying its payment model left new artists next to nothing. Yorke backed him on Twitter with a warning that new artists found on Spotify would not get paid. That October he went further, telling the Mexican site Sopitas that musicians should fight Spotify and could build the alternative themselves. To me this isn't the mainstream, this is is like the last fart, the last desperate fart of a dying corpse. What happens next is the important part.2

By Vulture's figures, Apple pays rights holders much the same share of its takings as Spotify does, and Yorke has not said what changed his mind.
