Jonny Greenwood plays “House of Woodcock” on Adam Buxton's podcast

written up for the archive

Jonny Greenwood is the latest guest on Adam Buxton's podcast, in a conversation recorded at London's Royal Festival Hall, and he ended it by playing “House of Woodcock”, a recurring theme from his Phantom Thread score.

He has no time for documentaries in which musicians look back on their past, and Radiohead have their own idea.

We often talk about doing a documentary where we're pretending to be really angry and bitter with each other

Jonny Greenwood1

It is, he says, something nice to talk about and never do.

His plan for Phantom Thread was a score small enough for cinemas to hire a local orchestra for a screening. Paul Thomas Anderson kept asking for bigger strings. He wanted the music very English, very romantic and written by Greenwood, which Greenwood now calls a three-way contradiction. He hints he may go to the Oscars, though his wife thinks the whole business ridiculous. Amusing Paul, I think, is the main goal.1

On Mark E. Smith he is in no doubt. His voice was completely the voice of my teenage years. More than any other singer, easily.1 His first concert was The Fall on the Kurious Oranj tour at Oxford Polytechnic. He could not take it and went outside, where he could still hear the music. I wasn't bored, and I wasn't frightened. It just knocked me over1.
