Thom Yorke tells El Mundo about his next record with Nigel Godrich

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke is trying to finish a new record with Nigel Godrich, he has told Pablo Gil of El Mundo in an interview published today. He gave it in a London hotel room, to promote his Suspiria score.

It's very electronic, but different from what I'd done until now. The method has been the opposite of depending on the computer.

A song is built in the studio, broken, and put back together in a live mix, and whatever comes out is recorded. Many of the sounds and effects were improvised.

Asked what a Radiohead row sounds like, he played both sides. Someone comes along and says, 'Let's go this way, haven't you heard Boards of Canada?' And then someone answers, 'I play the guitar, you son of a bitch.'7 The band have always taken an argument as proof that they care, and for a while, he admitted, the Boards of Canada one was him.

He has no wish to make very political music, he says, but everything I do tends towards it anyway.7 In his view the government has no idea how to handle Brexit, and proven corruption in the referendum met a shrug.

At Radiohead's big American shows this summer, crowds screamed at the line in “No Surprises” about bringing down the government, in a song he never meant as political. People feel outrage, he says, and nobody lifts a finger. I don't understand people. It's terrifying. That's when I feel I'm 50. And I think: 'Come on, wake up, everyone!'7
