It is a ballad for piano and voice for most of its length, with groaning, churning synthesiser at either end. Ruff Mercy, who animated the videos for all five tracks in the same pink and blue, lays silhouettes of dancing women over a flowing river in this one.
Noah Yorke, Thom's son, plays the drums on “Has Ended”, the slow swing tune that came out on 3 October, and the label's credits put him on “Volk” as well. Yorke unveiled “Has Ended” during an interview on BBC Radio 6 Music that morning. “Volk”, a week later, was the first of the five with no singing at all, and fans had already heard it under the film's first teaser trailer.
Luca Guadagnino's film, which opens in New York and Los Angeles on the album's release day, is a remake of Dario Argento's 1977 Suspiria, set in Berlin in that year.
Thom, myself and my editor Walter Fasano spoke at length about a score that sounded in line with the sound of the times, 1970s Europe.
