In Rainbows – From the Basement

Brett Turnbull, who directed Radiohead's 1994 Astoria film, was behind the camera again when they played In Rainbows for Nigel Godrich.

2008

one day in Covent Garden

In Rainbows had been out since October 2007, and Radiohead had not yet taken it on tour when they filmed it for From the Basement, Nigel Godrich's series. The band's own upload says it was recorded at The Hospital Club in London in April 2008, and Uncut reported that it was done in a single day. The tour opened in West Palm Beach on 5 May. David Barnard directed, and Godrich produced the session and mixed it.

Eight of the 14 songs are from the album and two from its second disc. The other four go back to Kid A and Hail to the Thief: “Optimistic”, “The Gloaming”, “Myxomatosis” and “Where I End and You Begin”. Its setlist is filed with the session in the live archive. “Where I End and You Begin” had only months left in the set. After the Tokyo International Forum that October it went unplayed until Kansas City in April 2017.

2008

VH1, then iTunes

The film went out first in America, on VH1 in May 2008. On 24 June, the day of the first of two nights at Victoria Park in London, it went on sale through iTunes as a video album of ten songs. The In Rainbows material stayed in and the four older songs were left out. Two of the performances went on the series' DVD that November, and in Japan the session was a DVD extra. The band's upload for At Home, on 4 June 2020, has all 14 songs.

2008–2009

two drummers on "Bangers + Mash"

The one to watch is “Bangers + Mash”, which Thom Yorke sings from behind a second drum kit set up beside Phil Selway's. The song itself was older than the record. The band first played it in Copenhagen in May 2006, and when it came out it was on the second disc, which went only to people who bought the boxed set.

It became a regular on the tour that followed, and the fans who filmed Radiohead in Prague the next summer caught it in Live in Praha. Two nights after Prague the band played it in Poznań, and the live archive has no later performance of it.
