Radiohead make their Top of the Pops debut with “Creep”

written up for the archive

Radiohead made their first appearance on Top of the Pops on Thursday 16 September, playing “Creep” on BBC One at 7pm. The single, reissued on 6 September, is in at number seven this week; when it first came out last September it got no higher than 78.

The band recorded their slot on 1 September, during a short stop in Britain between American trips, and played Glasgow's Barrowland two days later before going back to the States.

Mark Franklin introduced a show with Culture Beat's “Mr. Vain” at number one and the Pet Shop Boys' “Go West” at two, and Motorhead played “Ace of Spades” in the studio.

During the bridge Thom Yorke's face is laid over the rest of the band, and on the surviving tape, its uploader notes, Jonny Greenwood misses a cue.
