Radiohead play the Powerstation in Auckland
Radiohead played the Powerstation in Auckland on Wednesday 22 June. The New Zealand Herald's music columnist was in the crowd, and remembered Thom Yorke striking a Jesus Christ pose up on the balcony while a friend, Andrew Moore, muttered in his ear that they were Small Faces wannabes.
The night before, the band played their first New Zealand show, at McCarthy's Saloon Bar in Warners New Hotel on Cathedral Square in Christchurch, with the local bands Burn and EST opening. They had come over from Sydney, where they played on 18 June. When the tour was announced, the Auckland date was billed for the Town Hall.
The setlist runs to 13 songs, opening with “You” and “Bones”, with new ones including “My Iron Lung”, “Black Star” and “Just”. The columnist remembered a plain rock band, all guitars and no electronics, with the voice and the guitars all there. They got “Creep” out of the way about four songs in (it is fifth on the setlist), and he took that as what they thought of stardom.
