Radiohead count gold discs in their newsletter
Radiohead list gold discs in the USA and Canada, and a silver disc at home in their sixth W.A.S.T.E. newsletter, the single page the band write and post to fans from PO Box 322 in Oxford. With more peaks and troughs than a Californian seismic reading, 1993 left us feeling shaken if not a little stirred.

After three transatlantic crossings in about as many days, the band cast Tim Greaves, their long-suffering tour manager, as a parent at the fairground, paying the fares and sending them back across the Atlantic for another ride while they cried Again Again!

The troughs they name are the “Pop Is Dead” tour and their late cancellation at Reading. The peaks came first in the UK, with “Anyone Can Play Guitar” and Pablo Honey in the charts, then everywhere else with “Creep”, which also did well in the year-end polls. There were national chat shows in France and the States, and the tours at home and abroad went down well.
Under the heading “Gongs” the rest of the haul is a 3M award for Most Innovative Album of 1993, greeted with a “whoop!”, single of the year in the Select and Melody Maker polls, and an NME Brat. Fans get a dry thank-you for putting the band where they are and sticking with them through thick and thin.
In the autumn they left America only long enough to play Top of the Pops at home, then went back to start a long co-headline tour with Belly. The highlights, they say, were their spot on Conan O'Brien's chat show and Thom Yorke's duet with Tanya Donelly, Belly's singer, at the end of each night.
