Jonny Greenwood mourns his stolen guitar in Radiohead's tenth newsletter

written up for the archive

Jonny Greenwood's mind is on the people who stole Radiohead's instruments in America, and on whoever has his guitar, which he expects will end its days with Green Day songs being worked out on it. He admits he will miss it.

My only comfort is knowing that whoever has it will find it unplayable

Its Heath Robinson buttons and bolts, he reckons, will see to that. All five members write their own letters in the tenth W.A.S.T.E., the band's newsletter. Jonny writes his two days into the British tour.

Colin Greenwood typed his after the last show supporting Soul Asylum, at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas. Dave Pirner had asked Radiohead to come back on and jam after Soul Asylum's set, but they did not know the rock standards, so they declined and everyone went gambling instead. Colin also reports the “Street Spirit” video, shot over two nights from 6pm to 7am by Jonathan Glazer. Phil Selway writes from Los Angeles with toothache, and with the news that the Phil Is Great fan club has held its first meeting, in Japan.

Ed O'Brien says the last three weeks in America were hard going after the theft), though nobody was hurt. The R.E.M. dates, he says, were a utopian tour experience. He bombarded Peter Buck with questions about Murmur, and with Tom Gorman of Belly, another of R.E.M.'s support acts, decided their openers should start an appreciation society. His Order of the Red Guitar has had to become the Order of the Grey Guitar Plectrum, and this quarter it goes to Tony Benn MP, for integrity and good humour in politics.

Thom Yorke feels the same way about R.E.M.

R.E.M. made 1995 really mind blowing for us.
