Reports name Radiohead's next album Amnesiac after their Radio 1 night
The name of Radiohead's fifth album, Amnesiac, went out on BBC Radio 1 on Monday night, 11 December, NME reported today, picking it up from reports on the internet. The band have not announced it themselves. NME expect the album in March or April 2001, made of songs from the Kid A sessions and some new ones.
At midnight the band took the headline slot on The Breezeblock, Mary Anne Hobbs's programme, and played 32 records. They opened with Louis Armstrong's “St. James Infirmary”, slipped in two Christmas records, The Santa Claus Orchestra's “Silent Night” and Morgan's “Christmas in Waikiki”, and ended on “Dead Already” from Thomas Newman's American Beauty score. The Fall turned up too, as they had in the webcasts the band put out before Kid A.
NME name the DJs as Thom Yorke and Jonny and Colin Greenwood; Radio 1's tracklist credits the slot simply to Radiohead.
Earlier the same evening Steve Lamacq's Evening Session began airing the band's Radio 1 session, four Kid A songs reworked in Oxford at the end of November and going out one a night, with “The National Anthem” rebuilt around a brass band.
NME take Yorke's words to Rolling Stone's David Fricke as a description of Amnesiac, though he was talking about the music left over from the Kid A sessions and did not name it. He told Fricke the leftovers might make a better record than Kid A, and that the band could not judge. It goes off in two ways. One is like very broken machinery. The other is really fat and dark.
