Thom Yorke dedicated “Pyramid Song” to Napster at Roseland

written up for the archive

Radiohead played New York's Roseland Ballroom on Wednesday 11 October, and in the first encore Thom Yorke dedicated “Pyramid Song”, which is on no record yet, to Napster users, who had been swapping it as “Egyptian Song”. Jon Pareles reviews the night in Rolling Stone's issue of 23 November.

“The National Anthem” opened the set with Colin Greenwood's fuzz bass riff out in front and seven horn players alongside the band. “I Might Be Wrong”, “Dollars and Cents” and “You and Whose Army?”, all still unreleased, were played too. Over close to two hours the guitars and drums were loud, with only the odd computer loop.

The last-minute date was confirmed on 6 October, during a short promotional visit to North America. The 3,500 tickets went on sale the day before the show and sold out in three minutes; some fans had queued for 48 hours in the cold. The same day as the show came the news that Kid A had entered the American album chart at number one.

A sign on the door said the band asked people not to mosh, and the crowd swayed instead.
