Thom Yorke refuses Tony Blair his vote over missile defence

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke will not vote in the general election, expected on 7 June, and the reason he gives on spinwithagrin.co.uk, the Radiohead message forum, is Tony Blair's readiness to back the American missile defence plan known as “son of star wars”.

I won't vote and haven't voted for a man willing to go along with son of star wars.

It is the latest of his attacks on New Labour. Much of the country, he writes, could not care less about the election (his phrase is unprintable), and politicians just blame one another. The government, in his view, has betrayed everyone who backed it apart from its friends in business.

Yorke does deny that “You And Whose Army?”, from the forthcoming Amnesiac, is a direct attack on Blair, though the song has widely been taken as a comment on his government.
