Thom Yorke closes the Hollywood Bowl alone with “True Love Waits”

written up for the archive

Radiohead played the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Monday night, their first show there and the last North American date of their year, and Thom Yorke ended it alone, singing the unreleased “True Love Waits” on acoustic guitar.

Yorke walked on in a “New York City” T-shirt, the one John Lennon wears in the famous photograph, and barely said a word all night. “The National Anthem” opened and “Everything in Its Right Place” closed the main set with lines of the Beatles' “Baby You're a Rich Man” as its intro. During “You and Whose Army?” Yorke turned the camera fixed to his microphone stand on the audience.

Steven Mirkin, reviewing for Variety, puts the crowd at nearly 18,000 and makes Jonny Greenwood the real star, bounding round the stage and pushing his guitar and keyboards through gadgets and analogue synths. For all the arty production, Mirkin decides, Radiohead are first of all a guitar band.
