Jonny Greenwood tells Xfm new Radiohead songs are waiting

first posted on Treefingers by Miro · rewritten for the archive

Jonny Greenwood tells Xfm's John Kennedy that the Bodysong score was offered to Radiohead first, but the others wanted time off and he did not. He made it in the band's studio with techniques learnt during Kid A, so it felt more like an extension of Radiohead than a fresh start. He kept asking whichever bandmates dropped in to write or rehearse for advice, and Colin Greenwood plays on the album.

He does not see it as the start of a career in film scores. He would only do it again if the rest of the band were taking a break, and next to Radiohead he calls it an enjoyable, productive waste of time.

What Thom is doing is really important and there's lots of good music to be made. That's where my heart is.

Radiohead play the second of their two Earls Court nights tomorrow, 27 November. Jonny has never seen a gig there, but has been told it is the best indoor venue in the country, and he is still not used to playing to so many people. The tour, he says, has been fun and exhilarating all the way through, and the band are having a real laugh, even if it might not sound like it.

When the tour ends he hopes the band go straight back to work, with material already in hand.

There are already lots of songs and half written songs, so there's things for us to chew on already.
