Brad Mehldau plays a 19-minute “Paranoid Android” on Live in Tokyo

Brad Mehldau's Live in Tokyo, out on Nonesuch on 14 September, has a solo piano “Paranoid Android” that runs 19 minutes 29 seconds, the longest of its eight tracks. John Fordham, reviewing the album for The Guardian, rates it the least jazz-like thing on the record. It opens sparely and grows into an improvised stretch of counterpoint.
Radiohead have been in his repertoire for years. He put “Exit Music (For a Film)” on Songs: The Art of the Trio Volume Three in 1998 and played it live on Art of the Trio 4: Back at the Vanguard the next year. He recorded “Paranoid Android” in the studio for Largo in 2002, and his trio's “Everything in Its Right Place” came out on Anything Goes this February.
Mehldau recorded the album alone, without his trio, at a concert in Sumida Triphony Hall in Tokyo on 15 February 2003. The rest of the programme takes in Gershwin, Cole Porter, Thelonious Monk and two Nick Drake songs, “Things Behind the Sun” and “River Man”.
