OK Computer is 28th for Music Max and one of Rolling Stone's 50 moments

first posted on Treefingers by Miro · rewritten for the archive

Music Max, the Australian music TV channel, puts OK Computer 28th in its Top 200 Albums of All Time, one place below Michael Jackson's Thriller. Coldplay's Parachutes is 13 places higher, at 15, and John Farnham's Whispering Jack is third, behind only Pet Sounds and What's Going On.

Kid A is 93rd, and no other Radiohead album is in the 200. On the channel's Top 200 Groups, which The Beatles head, Radiohead are 25th, a place above The Clash and five above Coldplay.

Rolling Stone's issue of 24 June counts the making of OK Computer among 50 moments that changed the history of rock and roll, and files it under 1996, the year recording began. To the magazine it is the sound of rock breaking apart. It recalls Thom Yorke saying the record was meant to be upbeat and came out slightly poisoned, and Nigel Godrich ringing his girlfriend when it was finished.

This is something we never dreamed we could get done.

Rolling Stone's date is the issue's cover date; it was on the stands before then. The Godrich and Yorke lines are as the old desk reported them from the print issue.
