NPR airs Christopher O'Riley playing the unreleased “Good Morning Mr Magpie”
NPR's classical programme Performance Today has aired the pianist Christopher O'Riley playing two of his Radiohead transcriptions at a concert in Portland, Oregon: “Subterranean Homesick Alien” and “Good Morning Mr Magpie”. Radiohead have never released “Good Morning Mr Magpie”. It was first heard on the band's Christmas webcast in December 2002, and O'Riley put his own arrangement of it up as a free download in April 2003. “Subterranean Homesick Alien” is on his album True Love Waits: Christopher O'Riley Plays Radiohead, which Sony Classical released last year.
Performance Today has gone to O'Riley's Radiohead before this year. On 23 August it ran him at Piano Festival Northwest in Portland, playing excerpts from Rameau's Suite in E minor and then moving into Radiohead. The programme's note said he was not out to shock older listeners, only curious about every kind of music, and called what he played a softened version of the band.
His recitals this year put a classical first half before a Radiohead second, and in March he said he had tried that programme in Portland, where each audience took to the other's music.
