Phil Selway, Colin Greenwood and Ed O'Brien back Bill Nighy in Oxford

written up for the archive

Phil Selway, Colin Greenwood and Ed O'Brien played drums, bass and guitar behind the actor Bill Nighy on “Love Is All Around” at the Oxford Playhouse on Sunday 23 May, the finale of a benefit for Helen House, Britain's first children's hospice. Nighy won a Bafta for playing Billy Mack, the washed-up rock star in Love Actually who sings the song as “Christmas Is All Around”.

The evening, Childish Things, was put together by the actor Tom Hollander, of Gosford Park, who says he became involved with Helen House two years ago after his niece, born with brain damage, was cared for there. Tickets were £50 and the house of more than 600 sold out.

NME had announced the line-up on the Friday, without Thom Yorke or Jonny Greenwood. On the night the three were introduced from the stage as three members of Radiohead, home in Oxford with the Hail to the Thief tour behind them. The song began with Nighy and the trio, and then the evening's other performers crowded on with them: Steve Coogan, Griff Rhys Jones, Hugh Laurie, Mel and Sue, Jamie Theakston and Rory Bremner. People in the audience told NME it was far more chaotic than anyone expected.
