Ed O'Brien says Nigel Godrich will not produce the next record

written up for the archive

Nigel Godrich will not produce Radiohead's next record, Ed O'Brien told Zane Lowe on Radio 1 on Wednesday evening, and he was clear that this is not the end of an era. In May Godrich's part was still an open question, with the band working on their own while he made Paul McCartney's album.

With Nigel, we’ve been working together for 10 years, and we all love one another too much.

On every record they made with him except Hail to the Thief, O'Brien said, the band were a little in their comfort zone, and a band has to do what scares it. That is how The Bends led to OK Computer, and OK Computer to Kid A.

After much of the year in the studio, the band have been talking to Mark 'Spike' Stent, whose credits include Madonna and Björk, and hope to go back in with him in February. There is no release date. They have some great songs, he said, but will put out nothing they are not happy with, and the hard part is finding a sound that is different and still sits right with them.

He hopes a couple of tracks will be ready to download by about April or May. Radiohead will definitely tour in 2006, starting in British and European theatres in May and reaching America in the summer, by which time he hopes about ten new songs will be in the set. we’re going to do some theatres because part of what we’re doing is play new material. It’s a good way to get your shit together.1
