A Bush daughter leaves Radiohead's New York show under guard

One of George W. Bush's daughters was at Radiohead's second night at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York on Wednesday 14 June, and left during the last song, “The Tourist”, with six bodyguards pushing a way out for her through the crowd.

Thom Yorke wrote about it on Dead Air Space, the band's blog, on Saturday, before the band headlined Bonnaroo in Tennessee, and says he was told only the day before. From the stage the band had seen shoving and scuffling far back in the hall. It was the Secret Service clearing her path, and someone objected to being pushed aside. Yorke says he would have objected too, and more forcefully had he known whose bodyguards they were, which is perhaps why our lot chose not to tell me who was in the building before we went on. probably a good idea.⁴

The two nights, 13 and 14 June, were the New York stop on the band's North American theatre run. Eight songs each night are on no Radiohead record yet, and Nate Chinen, reviewing the first night for The New York Times, could tell from the applause that much of the crowd knew them already.

Yorke's post, under the heading “on the shitlist”, asks for answers on a postcard. It ends with eight lettered choices for how the band ought to feel, from “honoured” and “amused” to asking whether she had a valid ticket, and the last two are G. dont blame the daughter for the father H. shutup and smile⁴.
