Radiohead play two sold-out nights at Toronto's Hummingbird Centre

written up for the archive

Radiohead opened the first of two sold-out nights at the Hummingbird Centre in Toronto on Wednesday with “You and Whose Army?”, and a camera fixed to Thom Yorke's piano put his face, in black and white close-up, on one of ten odd-shaped screens hung over the stage like shards of glass. The band used the same piano camera at Molson Park in 2001. Eye Weekly reports these are their first seated shows in the city, on the North American theatre run they are playing before there is any new record.

Stuart Berman, reviewing the first night for Eye Weekly, rates “The National Anthem” and “Idioteque” rebuilt into muscular dance pieces, and Yorke, in jeans and a blue polo shirt, danced awkwardly and looked nothing like his miserable reputation. Jonny Greenwood stood apart at stage right among keyboards, laptops and machines, and stagehands wheeled out new set-ups between songs.

Eight of Wednesday's songs are unreleased. Yorke played a second drum kit on “Bangers + Mash”, and “4 Minute Warning”, a new ballad, opened the second encore before “Everything in Its Right Place” closed the show with the whole hall clapping the beat.

The second night shared only 11 songs with the first. Nine of Thursday's songs are new, and one of them, “Down Is the New Up”, had its first full-band performance.
