Thom Yorke says he has not done enough for the climate

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke, a spokesman for Friends of the Earth, says his own record on the environment falls short, in an interview with Annabel Crabb in Sydney's Sun-Herald on 14 August. I have no integrity in these things, I haven't done enough.2 There are no solar panels on his house yet, the heating isn't sorted out, his car isn't a Prius, and he flies all the time for work, which he hates but sees no way round for now. A job like his, he says, wastes energy everywhere, and he calls it madness.

He is worried that people will take his record as a sign that Radiohead are splitting, and will call it a solo album. The band stopped after the Hail to the Thief tour two years ago because everyone was having children and the band had become something they no longer understood. It wasn't much of a life any more . . . it was getting to be a bit of a drag, in a spoilt, white boy sort of a way.2 The electronic pieces on The Eraser were not really songs until he sang over them. Once they were, he wondered whether they should go to the band, then decided he was doing this now and would go back to Radiohead afterwards.

The Eraser has gone in at number two in Australia without a solo tour to promote it, as it did in America; in Britain it reached number three. Yorke's first reaction is a joke. Australia has been incredible. Maybe I should not go there more often!2 Then he worries at once that it will be taken the wrong way. God, I mean, that was a joke, OK?2
