Radiohead sign a four-hour “Videotape” remix on VHS for charity

written up for the archive

A four-hour remix of “Videotape” by James Rutledge, signed by all five members of Radiohead, has gone up for auction on eBay, with all the money going to the UK charity Missing People. The In Rainbows song comes on a single VHS cassette, the only copy made, with disintegrating red, blue and green visuals by Phillip M. Lane and packaging designed by Jacob Blandy.

Rutledge is a producer who has recorded as Pedro and remixed Bloc Party, the Kills and MGMT, and NME has just put him in its Future 50. The remix is his own project, separate from the band's contests for “Nude” and “Reckoner”. He first announced the tape in March, and said then that the one copy would be sold for Missing People. His friend and former bandmate in Dakota Oak, Dave Tyack, went missing in Corsica in 2002 and was found dead in 2004. The charity gave his family continued support during that incredibly difficult time5, Rutledge says.

He says the band gave him their full support to sell it. In the listing Paul Tuohy, the charity's chief executive, calls it the ultimate Christmas present for any Radiohead fan, and bidding runs for ten days, closing at 10pm on Sunday 21 December.
