Radiohead's 1998 Amnesty songs return on the ¡Released! box

written up for the archive

Radiohead's “Karma Police” and “Paranoid Android” from Amnesty International's Paris concert of 10 December 1998 are on ¡Released! The Human Rights Concerts 1986-1998, a box of six DVDs out on 5 November, with a companion two-CD set of audio highlights.

The other three films are the 1986 A Conspiracy of Hope tour of the United States, with U2, The Police and Lou Reed; the 1988 Human Rights Now! world tour, with Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Sting and Tracy Chapman; and An Embrace of Hope in Chile in 1990. The box holds about 12 hours of concerts, with five hours of extras that include interviews with Springsteen and Sting and Gabriel's home movies from the 1986 tour, never seen before.

The Paris film, The Struggle Continues..., runs about two and a half hours and had been out on VHS and DVD before falling out of print. Amnesty put the concert on at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy for the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Radiohead played ten songs, from “Lucky” to “Street Spirit (Fade Out)”, on a bill with Springsteen, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Alanis Morissette, Chapman, and Gabriel with Youssou N'Dour. Before the show, Thom Yorke told Channel 4 News that playing it was a way of addressing his guilt.
