Jonny Greenwood gets back a Telecaster stolen in Denver in 1995
Jonny Greenwood has been given back his Ebony Frost Fender Telecaster Plus, stolen with Radiohead's equipment in Denver nearly 20 years ago. The Denver Post reports that last year someone emailed The King of Gear, a website that catalogues the band's equipment, to say they recognised a guitar listed there as “old Tele2” as one they had bought in Denver in the 1990s. The site put them in touch with Plank, the band's guitar technician, and the guitar went back to Jonny.
The van, a rented Penske truck, was taken from outside a Days Inn on the morning of 4 October 1995 with nearly all their gear inside. It was the first day of the band's American tour with Soul Asylum. Four Telecasters were on Capitol's list of what went, yellow, black, green and sunburst. That night at the Ogden Theatre Thom Yorke and Jonny played an acoustic set on rented equipment. The next night in Salt Lake City was cancelled while the band bought new gear.
In the band's newsletter that autumn, Jonny wrote that he would miss his stolen guitar, and that his one comfort was that whoever had it would find it unplayable, with its buttons and bolts in the way. He didn't say which guitar he meant.
A year on, the Rocky Mountain News reported that none of the gear had been recovered.
