A Moon Shaped Pool gives Radiohead a record fifth Mercury nomination

written up for the archive

A Moon Shaped Pool is on the 12-album shortlist for the 2016 Mercury Prize, announced on Thursday 4 August. It is Radiohead's fifth nomination, more than any other act has had, and they have never won.

The judges, who include Jarvis Cocker, Annie Mac of Radio 1 and Jessie Ware, say the 12 records help make sense of an unsettling time, with ambition and unexpected instruments and arrangements in common. They will choose five finalists, and for the first time UK residents vote a sixth through on the prize's website. David Bowie's Blackstar is on the list, nominated after his death in January.

The winner is named on 15 September at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, live on BBC Four and BBC 6 Music, and takes £25,000.

Radiohead's four earlier nominations were for OK Computer in 1997, Amnesiac in 2001, Hail to the Thief in 2003 and In Rainbows in 2008; Kid A never made the list. Thom Yorke was shortlisted on his own in 2006, for The Eraser.
