Radiohead play past curfew at Austin City Limits on Thom Yorke's birthday

Radiohead's second Friday at Austin City Limits, on 7 October, fell on Thom Yorke's 48th birthday, and the band stayed on past Zilker Park's 10pm sound curfew to finish with “Fake Plastic Trees”, played with the lights low and the field almost silent. The song had only come back into the set that week, at the two Mexico City nights, and Austin was its third outing of the year.

The Austin Chronicle's reviewer heard Yorke thank the crowd for joining the band in their corner of the field and tell anyone who wanted something else to bugger off. The encore of six ran over half an hour, and by “Paranoid Android”, the review says, Yorke's voice was audibly straining.

It was Radiohead's first booking at the festival, now in its 15th year, and their first time in Austin since March 2012, when they taped the Austin City Limits television series. Both Fridays opened on a recording of Nina Simone talking about freedom, under red light, before “Burn the Witch”, but seven of the first night's songs, “Airbag” and “Karma Police” among them, were gone from the second. On the first, 30 September, Yorke sang a few lines of the Smiths' “How Soon Is Now?” on his own before “2+2=5”. The Austin Chronicle reviewed that first night.
