Radiohead close their Friday film series with Grant Gee's “The Numbers”

written up for the archive

The last of Radiohead's Friday films for A Moon Shaped Pool, posted on Instagram on 8 July, is Grant Gee's take on “The Numbers”, shot in the south Wales steelworks town of Port Talbot. Gee made Meeting People Is Easy, the 1998 film of the band on the OK Computer tour, and the band's caption calls his film the last in the current series.

The series began on 13 May, five days after the album came out as a download, following its two full videos, the stop-motion “Burn the Witch” and Paul Thomas Anderson's “Daydreaming”. We asked some people to make short vignettes interpreting sections of our new record.1 The first was by Tarik Barri, the audiovisual artist who writes his own software and makes the visuals at Thom Yorke's solo shows.

Oscar Hudson's “The Numbers” pours sand into a run-down bedroom. Adam Buxton's “Desert Island Disk” pans across flowers and then turns into a joke about a buffering video. Richard Ayoade's “Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Rich Man Poor Man Beggar Man Thief” went up on 17 June, the day the album reached the shops on CD and vinyl, and Ben Wheatley's “Ful Stop” hangs a man in a suit in the air over a pebble beach.

The strangest is the second “Identikit”, by Yorgos Lanthimos, the director of The Lobster. Denis Lavant sits in a bleak diner eating a sandwich that isn't there while the camera slowly closes in on him. Lavant is the man walking a road tunnel and being hit by car after car in Jonathan Glazer's video for UNKLE's “Rabbit in Your Headlights” (1998), which Yorke sings.
