New Zealand's national orchestra plays Jonny Greenwood's There Will Be Blood
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra closed the second concert of its Shed Series in Wellington on Friday night with a suite from Jonny Greenwood's score for There Will Be Blood, and played it lit blood red. Hamish McKeich, who conducts the series and put the programme together, took six cues from the film. One of them began life in Greenwood's concert piece Popcorn Superhet Receiver.
The Shed Series is the orchestra's run of informal concerts in Shed 6, on the waterfront. This time Arvo Pärt's Fratres, John Zorn's Kol Nidre and Haydn's Symphony No. 60 came before the Greenwood, with the crowd at tables, on benches and on the floor. Hadyn Green, reviewing the night for RNZ, rated the suite less bleak than the full soundtrack and nearer to 1970s film music and John Williams.
