Jonny Greenwood's Phantom Thread score loses the Oscar to Desplat

written up for the archive

Jonny Greenwood's score for Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread lost Best Original Score at the 90th Academy Awards in Hollywood on Sunday night to Alexandre Desplat's The Shape of Water. Desplat's score has now beaten Greenwood's at all four of the season's big score awards, from the Golden Globes in January to the BAFTAs in February.

It was Greenwood's first Oscar nomination, for his fourth film with Anderson after There Will Be Blood, The Master and Inherent Vice. In December, critics' groups in seven American cities had named it the year's best score. Phantom Thread went in with six nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Anderson, and won one, for Mark Bridges's costumes.

Greenwood was in the Dolby Theatre for it. In mid-February he told the Associated Press I don't know yet, but it would be nice to go because Paul's going to be there6. Anderson's email to the Associated Press then settled it. He's coming! I have confirmation!6
