Jonny Greenwood's You Were Never Really Here score is out

written up for the archive

Jonny Greenwood's score for Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here is out today as a download on Invada Records and Lakeshore Records, the day the film opens in British cinemas. Joaquin Phoenix stars as a traumatised veteran who tracks down missing girls for a living. CD and vinyl editions are to follow.

The first piece anyone heard was “Dark Streets”, which Greenwood shared on 2 March and Invada put up on SoundCloud. It sits in the middle of the album and comes back as a reprise near the end. The album begins and ends on two versions of one cue, “Tree Synthesisers” and “Tree Strings”.

Greenwood calls the music a mixture of string music, electric guitar and some sparse rhythms1. He announced the record himself on 19 February, in a post crediting the London Contemporary Orchestra and the cellist Oliver Coates. It signed off Hope you enjoy listening: the film's great.3
