Thom Yorke apologises for Brexit as The Smile open their tour in Dublin

written up for the archive

Thom Yorke apologised for Brexit from the stage of the 3Arena in Dublin on Thursday 7 March, the first night of The Smile's Wall of Eyes tour. We would like to humbly apologise on behalf of our nation for Brexit. The stupid c***s will be gone shortly.1 It came just before the encore, and got big cheers.

It was the band's first show in Ireland, and two new songs, “Instant Psalm” and “Zero Sum”, were played for the first time. The tour goes on to Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam, then a UK run that ends at Alexandra Palace in London on 23 March.

Eamon Sweeney, reviewing the night for Mojo, rates The Smile a band in its own right rather than a side project. Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner, with the American saxophonist Robert Stillman, came on about a quarter of an hour late. Yorke and Greenwood swapped between guitars, bass, keyboards and piano, and cameras on each player fed four screens above the stage, in front of a wall of flickering lights. An eight-minute “Bending Hectic” closed the main set.
