The Smile play Hammersmith, with a Thom Yorke solo song in the encore
Thom Yorke got the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith singing along to “Friend Of A Friend” when The Smile played London on Sunday 10 March. Lisa Wright, reviewing for DIY, picks it as the best moment of the night, from a band who sounded loose and plainly glad of a mid-sized hall after festivals and arenas.
After James Holden's support set, Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner came on ten minutes late, with Robert Stillman on saxophone, and opened with the title track of Wall Of Eyes. Wright describes little talk from the stage and a hall listening in near silence. Stillman's saxophone led into “Instant Psalm”, one of the two unreleased songs first played at the Dublin opener three nights earlier, and the other, “Zero Sum”, came later. An eight-minute “Bending Hectic” closed the main set.
The encore opened with “FeelingPulledApartByHorses”, Yorke's solo song, which had been in neither the printed Dublin set nor the band's set with an orchestra at the BBC 6 Music Festival in Manchester the night before.
