The Smile return to Manchester and play “I Quit” without the orchestra

written up for the archive

The Smile played “I Quit” without an orchestra at the O2 Apollo in Manchester on Tuesday 19 March, their second show in the city in ten days. On 9 March they had headlined the BBC 6 Music Festival at the O2 Victoria Warehouse with the London Contemporary Orchestra, and played the Wall Of Eyes song live for the first time.

Thom Yorke introduced “Instant Psalm” as a new song. It is still unreleased, and was first played on the tour's opening night in Dublin on 7 March.

Before “Friend Of A Friend” the piano had to be turned round. Yorke asked the crowd to bear with them, and someone shouted back “take ya time”.
