The Smile play with an orchestra for the first time at 6 Music Festival

written up for the archive

The Smile played with an orchestra for the first time on Saturday 9 March, headlining the BBC Radio 6 Music Festival at the O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester with the London Contemporary Orchestra. The orchestra joined Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner for the first 12 songs, and the eighth of them was the first live performance of “I Quit”, from Wall of Eyes, out since late January. It had not been played at the tour's opening night in Dublin two days before.

The festival had announced the show in January as a world exclusive, and Jordan Rakei supported The Smile.

The orchestral set also carried two songs still unreleased, “Tiptoe” and “Instant Psalm”, the second first played in Dublin.
