The Smile play Thom Yorke's “Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses” in Brighton

written up for the archive

The Smile opened their encore at the Brighton Centre on Monday 18 March with “Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses”, Thom Yorke's solo single from 2009. It was one of the last nights of the March European leg for Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and the drummer Tom Skinner.

The show began quietly, with “Wall of Eyes” rearranged for Yorke's acoustic guitar and Greenwood coming in on bass halfway through. Later Greenwood played his bass with a bow on “A Hairdryer”, and Yorke sang “Thin Thing” through a vocoder.

The reviewer for whynow reports the loudest cheer of the night when Yorke started the bassline of “The Smoke”, but thought “Bending Hectic”, the main-set closer, fell short of the record. Jay Cohen, reviewing the show for When The Horn Blows, counted the same song among the clearest proof of the trio's songwriting.

After the Yorke song, the encore went on with “Teleharmonic”, dedicated from the stage to Charlie Myatt, the agent who has worked with Yorke and Greenwood for years. The night ended with Yorke at the piano for “You Know Me!”.
