Jonathan Zawada's film of Tall Tales, the album Mark Pritchard and Thom Yorke announced in March, is showing tonight in about 145 cinemas in 20 countries, the night before the record comes out on Warp. For most of them it is a single screening. Pritchard was expecting 50 to 100 cinemas when he spoke to MusicRadar in April. We made this because we wanted to make it - there's no money in it.9

The list runs from Hilo to Seoul, and from the IFC Center in New York to the Fondazione Prada in Milan.

In Japan, Warp's partner label BEATINK follows tonight's premium screening with daily showings to 15 May at Human Trust Cinema Shibuya in Tokyo and Theatre Umeda in Osaka. Every visitor gets a zine Zawada made about the ideas behind the film and the album.

Zawada directed, animated and edited the film, which runs 64 minutes and ignores the album's running order. A bird-like figure carrying a bindle crosses the map of an island and sets off each song's video in turn, and “The Spirit”, out today as the last single, closes the film though it sits mid-album. The pictures come from everywhere: black-and-white footage of Manchester children digging holes, smashing windows and lighting bonfires, old colour claymation, clips found online. For me, it was really just a reflection of the music.8

At a press screening in March the short clips that link the songs drew big laughs. Pritchard called them a palate cleanser between the heavy, dystopian songs.
