Song · The Bends era (1994–96)
The Trickster
On its first night, in Reading in February 1994, it had words that are not the ones on the record.
1994
the first cd
The archive first has it at the Royal Berks Hospital Social Club in Reading on 21 February 1994, with an early lyric that did not survive to the record, the night that gave “My Iron Lung” its first airing too, and “The Trickster” went out on 26 September on the first of the two “My Iron Lung” CD singles. Reviewers rated it and “Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong” the strongest of the batch, noisy in a way that pointed at Sonic Youth, and this site's 2003 version recommended it to every budding guitarist.
1997–98
lille to radio city
It was not played again until Lille on 12 October 1997, more than three years later, and then turned up in Rotterdam and Brussels on the same leg of the OK Computer tour. Most of its nine nights are from 1998, and the last of them was at Radio City Music Hall in New York on 18 April, the night the tour ended, when it came back into the set alongside “Bishop's Robes” and “Polyethylene”.
